PSKoi - New Quarantine Procedure

Post by Russell Peters »

We have developed a relationship with Dr. Strasser, she is the District 1 Field Veterinarian, Aquaculture Coordinator for the Indiana State Board of Health and through her we have been introduced to Dr. Lorraine Corriveau, who is a Purdue Clinician specializing in fish and exotics, as well as Dr. Kathleen Hartman, MS,DVM,PhD, Aquaculture Program Leader for the USDA APHIS Veterinary Services. These are the people that have helped us determine what the best course of action is to improve our quarantine protocol so that PSKoi customers will get the healthiest Koi possible.

Dr. Hartman recommends a QT procedure where the Koi are kept at 75 degrees for a period of 30 days and then tested for KHV. Dr.Corriveau will be coming to our facility to do blood draws and gill snips to get the testing done. We will be doing this on every single shipment we get and samples from each breeder will be tested. Dr. Strasser will be over seeing our facility and what we are doing. We are very excited about this and so is Dr. Strasser. Her first visit will be this Friday as she would like to bring 3 new Veterinary students by to look at the facility and see how we operate.

Of course we will also do our usual treatments for parasites as well. Again, Dr Hartman recommends the best temperature to heat the Koi, for KHV testing, is 75 degrees so this is what we will keep them at as we want to ensure we deliver Koi, to PSKoi customers, that have gone through the best possible QT procedures, and keeping conditions, so that they are as healthy as possible.

Today we had a meeting with Dr. Strasser, Aquaculture coordinator for the Indiana State Board of Health, and she brought two other Veterinarians and two Vet students with her. Dr. Strasser is on the far right in blue and Kiwi is, well Kiwi even farther right. I have to apologize as I do not remember the names of the others and I did not write them down.

We gave them a tour of the facility and discussed everything from the source water, filter systems, heating systems, flow through systems to the waste system. Then we discussed KHV, what happened to us, and what more we could do so that this does not happen again. We want to make sure we contain it and identify it before fish are released so that we can protect our customers and ourselves. Dr. Strasser would like us to limit our exposure to one breeder per tank but we explained that would not be possible. It will be possible to limit it to two and sometimes one but, with proper testing, we still should be able to identify carriers. Dr. Strasser is confident that gill snips will give us a high level of comfort as PCR testing can be done.

We discussed our QT protocal with Dr. Strasser and she mentioned that the purpose of any QT is to isolate, separate and test. The proper conditions for testing must be given to the fish and, anything less than what she described is not a proper QT protocol. Remember, it is to isolate, separate and test.

Dr.Strasser also mentioned that she has been talking with Dr. Hartman and Dr. Gustafson(USDA/APHIS) and they would like to create an "oversight" program for us and if we were interested she would set up a phone conference. I said, without hesitation, yes as I want to have every possible benefit these people have to offer our customers. Dr. Strasser said that they could help keep us updated on QT procedures and determine the proper number of Koi that need to be tested from each shipment we receive. Today was an exciting step forward for PSKoi.
