Ojiya/Isawa/Hiroshima Bound PSKoi Winter 2024

Post by Russell Peters »

Happy New Year everyone! I am going to Japan on January 15th for another Tosai buying trip where I will hand select everything I get. This trip will also include the AJKS in Tokyo again and, as it isa fully open this year, I hear that there will be a lot of hobbyists from the US attending. This should be fun.

I have started taking people to Japan again and, on this trip, I have a dealer coming with me so I can show him the ropes as he is growing his business. I think one of the hardest things to do, as a new dealer, is to have to rely on buying Koi wholesale from dealers in the US. Many of these dealers shouldn't even be selling Koi. Most of these dealers charge way too much, and sell Tosai that are cheap, so it puts young dealers at a huge disadvantage. I know first hand as I went through this when I first started out.

After a long two days of travel we are in Nagaoka. I decided to fly out of LAX this time as Japan airlines has a discount carrier, called ZipAir, that has business class seats available for the same price as I pay for premium economy out of Chicago.
On Sunday I flew to LA so that I could take this flight and give it a try. I had to spend the night in LA as the flight to Japan leaves at 9:30am. It was well worth it.
Shortly after I arrived in Tokyo Marlon’s flight arrived and we headed to Nagaoka.
As you can see Marlon is quite happy to be in Japan.

We arrived at our hotel at 7:15pm last night, checked in, and had dinner with JR. We went to sleep and then had to get up early as I scheduled our first appointment in Isawa. I usually spend 8 days in Ojiya, go to the AJKS in Tokyo and then go to Isawa to visit Maruyama, INC and Hiroi but I had noticed that Maruyama started selling his Jumbo Tosai last month and I did not want to wait any longer and risk not getting a good choice.

This meant that our first day, barely rested, we drove 440 miles roundtrip to visit Maruyama and select Tosai.I did not have the address for Maruyama so I used the Route Inn Hotel for a reference point. I will be going back to Isawa later to visit INC and Hiroi.

We arrived back at the hotel quite late so I am not going to post everything but here is a hint.

We have been quite busy and I am still behind in posting but will have time to catch up a bit soon.

I am very impressed with the continued quality at Maruyama Koi Farm. It has become one of my favorite farms to visit. I was hoping he would have Showa Tosai this time but I did not see any. On my first visit here, during Covid, he had them tucked away and didn't release them until April. I am hoping that is the case but forgot to ask.

The Kohaku I picked up were all 28cm to 32cm and very active. I was surprised at the many unusual patterns he had this time. This is more of what I expect to find with Murata Kohaku. Here are a few of my favorites.

Our next visit was to Kanno Koi Farm. It was the earliest appointment I have had, probably ever, in Japan. I was largely unprepared and did not end up getting videos or pictures of anything else but Tosai.Actually, there are no videos of Tosai either. Maybe I was just out of practice but I think it was just too early. His facility in Nagaoka is actually quite close to the hotel.

Last year, when I visited, I noticed he had quite a few other varieties of Tosai but none were available. This year, other than Goshiki, he showed me Doitsu Showa. Kin Showa, Hariwake, Ochiba, GR Ochiba, Doitsu Ochiba, Beni Kikokuryu, Kin Ki Usturi and Goromo. I did not get a lot of them but picked some every nice examples of these varieties.

Today we visited Yamanaka Ohya. He is one of my favorite breeders that has a nice mix of Tosai. This is a nice change because two of my three trips to Japan primarily focus on Gosanke, Shiro Utsuri and Goshiki.

Marlon was also quite excited to be here, as you can see, like a kid in a candy store. If you look closely in the pictures you can see a new type of Koi that was bred at Yamanaka Ohya Koi Farm. It is a Ki Sanke.
