Ojiya/Isawa/Hiroshima Bound PSKoi Spring 2023

Post by Russell Peters »

I am on my way back for another buying trip today. During this trip the International Junior Koi Show is being held in Nagaoka. I am going to attend the show so my trip shedule is going to be slightly different. I arrive in Ojiya first but only spend one day there before going to Isawa and Hiroshima. I then spend the last 9 days of the trip in Ojiya, so I am attending the show on 4/23, then I continue my Koi hunting in the Ojiya area.

True Story : Never in the history of going to Japan have I ever mixed up the departure date with the arrival date. This is important because the arrival date is always one day later than your departure date.

Over the last two years pricing for flights to Japan, and shipping from Japan, have increased. The prices for flights doubled and shipping rates have tripled. The flight for my October trip, and the shipping for the come from that trip, were the highest I had ever paid. Japan fully opened so, faced with two more trips in the next four months, I started looking at fairs December 2022 for my January and April 2023 trips. The fares had already dropped by 50% so I bought both tickets.

When April finally rolled around I kept thinking of the date 4/10. In fact I had been thinking 4/10 for months. That was my departure date but I started lining up hotels and scheduling breeders as if that were my arrival date.

When I landed at Narita airport, and got phone reception, I got a few messages, and some missed calls from Yuki asking me where I was so I responded that I just landed as if nothing were wrong. One of the early messages was that I had an appointment to pick Tosai at Isa Koi farm at 9am. I didn't think much of it but responded that I didn't get my rental car until 10am tomorrow. I got a response, right away, asking me if I knew what day it was. Before I could answer she told me it was already the 11th not the 10th. Still not comprehending what I had done I asked her to cancel the appointment.

At this point I am standing in a very long line, to get through immigration, and it dawned on me that at that very moment I was supposed to be driving to Isawa. Next thing that got me was that rental car reservations cancel after an hour if you are late, that I still had to go to Nagaoka and my hotel was for the night before and I no longer had a place to stay. Yuki called the rental car company, they still had a car for me, the hotel was fully booked but I got a room somewhere else.

I then had to contact Miwa Sakai as I had an appointment at 9am in Isawa, to pick Koi, but my rental car wouldn't be available until 9am and it is almost a 4 hour drive to Isawa. The appointment, which was with Maruyama, was changed to 2pm and I made it.

At this point, other than being exhausted, I am back on track for everything else and will try to reschedule the missed appointments in Ojiya at the end of the trip.

My main focus for this trip is to get high quality female Tosai. Female is key as many breeders are doing their final culls and pricing is higher.

I picked 10pcs. from Maruyama's highest available grade of Kohaku and GR Kohaku. These Tosai are all 35cm to 38cm and Maruyama sexed them while I was there and they are female.

There were two grades below the females but as far as I could tell the only difference between the two was size. I bought from the less expensive grade. These are still 30-33cm.

I spent all of yesterday at INC and have a lot of pictures to post. I am going to do a little catch up now but I am visiting Hiroi next and then I have an 8 hour drive to Fukuyama. I am behind because of my travel date mix up.

We started off at INC visiting a Tosai house I hadn't been to in a while. This is a greenhouse they keep some of their better Tosai in. They use no spirulina on these Tosai as color developed by spirulina is usually lost at a later date.

The process of finding Koi at INC is different than most breeders I visit. You can say what you are looking for, you can give them a price range, but you can never be sure of what the prices are until the Koi are pulled. Case in point. In this Tosai pond I was offered some Tosai in the price range I was asking for but the very first Tosai that came out was the most expensive Tosai I had ever been offered. I did not buy it, but it is available, and the pricing will not be published. The question is, is it Sanke or Showa?

When I took this video I thought they were done adding Tosai but three Kohaku went in as I was taking pictures. The Tosai have been sedated to make it easier to take pictures.
