All breeders have Koi that are kept away from where most people can see them. They are the highest available level of quality and are seen when dealers develop relationships with those breeders. Matsue is one of those breeders that I have this relationship with. On my original visit with Matsue I discussed doing this with him and told him I had an extra day that I would be willing to come back. His English is about as good as my Japanese so talking about this in person was the best way to go.

Once he agreed to bring these Jumbo Tosai to his main greenhouse I contacted my customers and set up a time that I would be able to live video chat with them, introduce them to Takahiro Litsuka (Matsue), and then show them the Tosai via the live feed and they could choose what they want.

This is something I am willing to do for anyone but you must understand that it can't be just to look at these Koi. It is a lot of work for the breeder to move these fish and it is stressful for the fish. This is something I can only arrange if you are buying something. I have not had a single person who didn't find something they liked and sometimes more than one.

Today was the judging for the International Junior Koi show in Ojiya. Judging ended around 1pm so I showed up at 2pm and they were still sorting Koi into their tanks for display.

It is a small Koi show so all of the Koi are judged in plastic bags layed out on mats.

Hoping to get a head start on pictures of the entries I started walking around. A lot of the signs, that tell what fish won which awards, weren't up yet so there wasn't much I could do.

GC A and GC B were easy to figure out so I took pictures and video of each.

GC A is a Dainichi Showa.

It has been four years since I have been to an outdoor Koi show. I forgot how difficult it was to take pictures. It was a warm, sunny day so there was shade, clear water and glare in the ponds and the fish were very skittish. I spent an hour playing around with camera settings and finally gave up and took what pictures I could.

The International Junior Koi Show had over 1,800 Koi entered and they were all smaller Koi. They give Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies, instead of calling it 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. It makes it sound more glorious but it' still 1st, 2nd or 3rd place and they also give out 4th place awards. They then have best in Country awards which is a Koi picked as the best Koi entered from an owner is another country. If there is only one entry from the vountry you are from it's a little pointless. They alsi have GC a and GC B and Kokugyo for all sizes. It is a lot of awards but with 1,800 entries there are a lot of nice fish that leave with nothing.
