Homare asked me if he could use my camera and I could hear him taking pictures. He was just taking the same picture over, and over, and over again...

It isn't as easy as it may seem. For every Koi that is put in front of you you have to look at many different things to determine if that Koi is worthy. Skin, Beni, Sumi, Body are important but it is how all those elements fit together that make a good Koi. If you take the time, and make the effort, you end up with Koi like these.

50 out of 1800, that's a lot of self control.

Most of it is the Koi not being what I would want to sell.

Well you picked some nice ones. I am not a huge gosanke fan but you already got me to pick up two. If there is room in the budget after getting the rest of what I want, I may have to circle back to these.

Today we went to Yamanaka Ohya. Yamanaka Ohya was the breeder responsible, many years ago, for the variety known as the Aya Wakaba. Many just call it a Ki Shusui as some do look similar but I don't think they are the same.

I have not been to visit him since 1/2021, although I did get Tosai from him last year as well. I just didn't hand select. This time I did get to hand select. I do prefer hand selecting, not only because I get better quality, but also because I can get more varieties.

I got Kujaku, Doitsu Sanke, Kin Matsuba, Aya Wakaba, Koyo(yellow Kohaku), Asagi, GR Asagi, Ki Matsuba, Shusui, Shiro Utsuri, Doitsu Shiro Utsuri, Doitsu Ki Showa, Yamabuki, GR Hi Utsuri, Hariwake, Hi Utsuri, Beni Goi and a couple others.

I am not sure if you are aware that we have been expecting another big storm in the area. Forecasts are calling for anywhere between 15" and 30" of snow. It was really nice all morning and just about at noon it hit. You could feel it coming.

Today was very cold but not as windy as yesterday and periods where there wasn't much snow so I am hoping the worst is over. I am driving to Tokyo for the All Japan Koi Show this time so having roads that are fairly clear is good. It is a 4 hour drive under normal conditions.

Next on the list of breeders to visit was Murata. Murata is Kohaku only but some of my favorites as you will see. I don't know how many years ago he built this greenhouse but it is a favorite of mine.
