A couple of weeks ago there was a huge snow storm here but you would never know it driving around town. I love snow, especially in Japan, as they don't have the same winds that make it -20 like we have in Indiana. I drove up to Yamakoshi to enjoy some of it.

Today i went to Marudo Koi Farm. Marudo and Homare Kawakami, Torazo's son-in-law, are very good friends and Homare is the one that started taking me there last year. It has quickly become one of my favorite Koi farms.

Marudo was kind enough to let us hand select through three of these tanks of Tosai. I ended up getting 83 Tosai from the group. Mostly Showa and Sanke but also a few Hi Utsuri, Kohaku and Shiro Utsuri.

I was asked to find a very nice Asagi, Nisai or older, so I drove up to Hosokai Koi Farm. This is one of the hardest places to get to once there is a lot of snow. A number of years ago my car actually slid backwards, downhill, on the way up there. I decided to take a video with my phone but stopped a little ways into it as the road got a little icy...

I did make it to the farm though as the roads were mostly clear. I have fallen a few times walking down the hill to the lower greenhouse as well. Hosokai had very few Koi left but I asked him to look to consider something he might have in reserve.

I got to visit Kanno to hand select Tosai for the first time in a long time. I have always bought Nisai and older Koi before and he usually didn't have much in the way of Tosai available. I am not sure what his protocol is for getting Tosai either but he took over a week to decide to let me come. This is not his top grade as that becomes available in another two months. He had some very nice smaller Tosai though.

While Homare and kanno were talking I took this video of the higher grade Goshiki. You can't tell much from it but it got my attention.

Homare Kawakami has the yellow Marudo jacket on, he is Torazo's son-in-law, and Kanno is in black. Kanno is Kazuhiro Hirasawa.

This video was done after he caught the Tosai, there were probably 1,500 in the net, and we were just about to start. Some breeders actually net every single Tosai so you can say " yes or no " and some just seine them and you have to pick the ones out of the seine net that you want. Bringing uop every single Tosai is my preferred method. It takes longer but you get to see every single one where as you can miss some great ones when they are all in a seone net.

Today was a day of fun at Isa Koi Farm. I don't think I have never hand selected Tosai from Isa and today was a treat. It was a lot of work but worth it as you shall see.

it is a long process hand selecting Tosai, especially when the breeder does it the way it was done here. The process starts with netting the Koi. There were two tanks that had Showa in the grad I was looking for. This is the first tank.

Once the Koi are in the net then they are scooped up by the white net and put into the upper blue tub. From that tub I take what I want and put them into the floating basket and the rest are released back into the pond. Each tank had 900 Tosai so I went through 1,800 Tosai. I ended up with 20 from one tank and 30 from the other tank. It is a lot off hard work for everyone involved.
